Hi All

I inherited a ca arcserve 12 backup and busted dell powervault. LSS i got the powervault swapped out with a new one and installed but when i tried to run the daily backups i got a fail on backin up exchange.

So two questions:

1. i took out all the old tapes and reorganized them. Do need to format them individually before i run the daily backup? If so whats the best way? OR do I erase pro them?

2. the exchange server (same server arcserve is on) is failing with an integrity check. ca told me to move the log files somewhere else and try to back it up again AND if that fails contact MS. The failure coincides with errors in the eventlog detailing a Volume Shadow Copy service errors querying VSS writer + VSS writer unable to backup First Storage Grp (exchange) no log files have been truncated.

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

ok doing a quick erase

on my second issue still no progress

Well it turned out that the exchange problem was resolved by enabling circular logging from within exchange. This got rid of the logs and I was able to back up exchange no problem.

you know i foolishy ran an erase plus on a few tapes and not surpisingly the serial # is gone now.

i have a barcode reader in my tape autoloader Im wondering is there a way I can get the serial #s to show up up again in case I need to do a restore?

be sure that ARCServe is configured to use the Barcode reader.
Normally a quick erase leaves the serialnumber untouched. When a barcode reader is available AND arcserve is configured to use it the serialnumber will always be available regardless of which erase method is used.

regards
