I see that there is an option to add a 'file' device in this version of Legato Networker. This seems like a great way to backup logical logs rather than go directly to tape. Does anyone have any experience with this or with the Disk Backup option available with NetWorker v7??

Thanks,

Yes, file devices are supported in NW 6. However, you will need a license for this option.

The only difference with respect to NW 7 is that the "advanced" file type devices has been introduced in NW 7 - this allows reads and writes at the same time.

605, Thanks very much for the response. What Legato product do I need a license for to use this feature?

Under NW 6, can you get around the inability to read and write at the same time by creating multiple 'file' devices and use each device with a different client?

In this way, I could be writing Informix Logical Logs to one 'file' device and reading a different save set from a second 'file' set.

Thanks again,

What you need is the "Backup-to-disk" option/enabler.

Yes, the read-or-write limitation works per device and of course you may use multiple devices in parallel, as usual.

Thanks again for the response. If I did set up two 'file' devices under NW 6.1, could they both be configured to point to the same disk file system?

thanks again

Yes, but each must point to another directory. Otherwise, you would specify the device name twice which NW will not allow.
