Advice:

We are looking to purchase a BCM200 with release 3.5. One of our vendors claims it is new. Are their any problems with release 3.5?

On the other hand, should we buy release 4.0?

I doubt highly that a 3.5 unit has sat on a shelf for so long.

i'm not a fan of 4.0 yet, so I would tell the Vendor to upgrade it to at least 3.6 or 3.7.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

If its 3.5 make sure you check the BFT!! most 3.5 systems required a new BFT due to bad capicitors. I beleive the replacement offer expires this Dec.

Dec 31, 2007.

If the Caps are green there bad.
If the Caps are blue there good.

I have to say that the element manager interface alone is reason enough to switch to 4.0. But I'm an IT guy and not an old Norstar hack :) . It's much easier to manage especially if you want tight integration in your LAN and plan on heavy use of IP telephony.

Definitely go with at least 3.6/3.7, and if 4.0 is not going to cost you that much more then I would say go for it unless you have a Companion system that you are going to use it with (Nortel dropped Companion support in 4.0).

Definitely check the BFT. 4.0 is good because you can use the telset programming without damaging the hard drive (I'm an old Norstar guy). I also think the Linux based Element Manager is the easiest way to make changes to the IP settings of your system.

Loading patches even on a Linux based system is easier.

3.5 can be upgraded for free to 3.7 which is very stable and good with IP. I've never had a problem with telset on pre-Linux versions, everybody frreaks just like saying set relocation, both features work 98% of the time and have never corrupted a system I've worked on.

They should work 100% of the time. Yes it can be done, but if you have a problem and you have to call Nortel to fix it they will socket to you as they do not support using the phone as a programming device on 3.7 and below.

Do it at your own risk.
