I backup my exchange information store every night. The logs say that the backup is completed successfully, but the file size of the backup has not changed for a week!! Any ideas what the problem may be?

oh yeah, and the date modified is the right date as well

The size of the physical database file will not change unless you run out of white space.

Check event log for EventID 1221 which tells you how much white space you have. Exchange will use this space before expanding the file.

I do get EventID 1221...it says I have 111 megabytes of free space after online defrag. Will the white space just expand when that 111 megs is taken up?

No the white space (or unused space) is the difference between the physical size of the database and the amount of that file that XC is actually using.

e.g. Physical DB is 1Gb, XC is only using 500Mb, white space would be 500Mb.

White space is created either by using mailbox manager to prune data older than a certain limit or by removing mailboxes and XC purging them after the deleted items / mailbox retention limit.

Just keep an eye on how 1221 changes over time. If it goes down to 0 then XC will extend the database file as required.
