A lot would depend on how you plan to use it. If you are looking for the best server platform in the world, go with linux. Most packages come with apache web server, used by 56% of all web servers in the world. It also comes with mail server, ftp server, telnet server, php, MySQL and perl, just to name a few. A Windows based system with all this would cost several thousand dollors. With linux, it's all free. Lest I start sounding like a linux salesman, if you are just looking for a good desktop environment, some prefer the look and feel of Windows. As for the system requirements, linux can run on a 286 if it has to (performance will suffer) but Windows98 and up needs a pentium class machine. Linux supports most of the plug 'n play devices Windows does but some of them may require a little more work to set up. You should be able to find software for just about anything you can think of but I'm not sure about games. Most linux software is distributed under the GPL license and comes with the source code so you can make changes to it and recompile and redistribute it under the rules of the license. I hope I answered your question.
