Just pulled apart an ailing Sony VAIO and found within a Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 drive, model HTC426060G9AT00, 60Gb with PATA connector. The drive is running but is developing bad blocks, so I want to take an image if possible before it collapses.

The connector looks remarkably like that on a conventional 2.5" PATA laptop drive, but I cannot find any detailed spec on the Hitachi site to confirm pin connections.

I have a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adaptor, but does anyone know if it will work on this 1.8" drive, or just plain blow it up?

Hmmm, had thought about that, but the space available inside the tiny Sony Vaio would probably rule it out unfortunately. (User currently has it back and working for the moment, so can't precisely measure up). I guess that fact they were so short of space meant they ended up putting in a 1.8" drive rather than the more common 2.5".

Good thought though Ben, thanks again...

Yeah, the space can be cramped... I think it would just extend the drive a bit... but you never know...

I think you two guys really deserve stars for all your efforts! Thanks again...

Thanks Roger, but it would have felt better getting a star for solving the problem! Anyway your gratitude is appreciated and the feeling is mutual.

Hi people,

I got a Sony Vaio VGN-T340P with ailing hdd.

Pulled apart and found within a Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 drive, model HTC426060G9AT00, 60Gb with PATA connector. The drive is running but is so so so so slow.

The C4K60 is compatible to my 2.5" external hdd casing.

I have been trying to look for the replacement of this hdd since June of this year. But the prices that I had found are crazily high, as high as US 450+.

But as of yesterday, I have found some sources and their price is around US 180 to 200 dollars. But I'm not sure if they are legit, because of the large price difference with the ones I found with before.

I will try to order from them maybe within the month.. I will try to post again here if the hdd is new and in good condition. And if the company is a legit source.

I have also found another option with the sony vaio vgn-t340p, There are two version of hdd used in this model. The other hdd is a TOSHIBA MK6006GAH 60GB, but the bracket and cable are a different kind. I have also checked their prices, for the cable I got USD 20.00 and bracket for 73.00.. or the other way around. (sorry, I forgot it) but that's the combination.. and maybe the TOSHIBA hdd will be cheaper... I have found some in the EBAY selling at around US 120.00

Oh.. I am so confused, which approach to take...

If any one of you have successfully replaced the HITACHI with a new HITACHI, it the drive working properly.. or this model of HITACHI crashes a lot?

Thanks.

My user is currently still operating her Sony VAIO with the original HDD in it. I ended up cloning it to another drive, running MHDD on it, then copying back. She wasn't prepared to buy another disk at those crazy prices. Sony will not sell the hard disk direct to me - they want the whole machine back, and quoted silly money to do the whole job.

As far as I can see, 1.8" disks haven't become popular, possibly because of quality control, longevity, and price. Consequently, there are very few choices available in the marketplace...
