Just pulled apart an ailing Sony VAIO and found within a Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 drive, model HTC426060G9AT00, 60Gb with PATA connector. The drive is running but is developing bad blocks, so I want to take an image if possible before it collapses.

The connector looks remarkably like that on a conventional 2.5" PATA laptop drive, but I cannot find any detailed spec on the Hitachi site to confirm pin connections.

I have a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adaptor, but does anyone know if it will work on this 1.8" drive, or just plain blow it up?

Just tried Hitachi technical, and they indicated the connectors are the same. I can confirm pinouts are identical as I've now successfully made an image of that drive! [thumbsup2]

Next problem is I can only find a source of these drives at Sony, but they won't sell me just a drive. They want the whole PC back, and a very large amount of dosh to take it apart, change the drive over, reassemble, and return it.

Unless anyone knows another source of Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 1.8" drives...

Thanks for your efforts Tony. Unfortunately they're all either far too small (20Gb) or the wrong interface (ZIF). [sad]

I did find a 1.8" 40Gb PATA yesterday in the U.S. which would just about be big enough, but at roughly £130 plus image copy/fitting charge, the user turned up her nose... Did seem a bit of a rip off, but then we're used to that in the U.K.

Many thanks again Tony, but unfortunately it's the wrong type! The HTC426060G8CE00 model is a 60Gb but has a ZIF (ATA-7) interface. No others available apparently...

It's good of you to keep searching, but I guess the user is going to have to draw a line under this one and put it down to experience. A neat, very expensive paperweight...

I hate giving up!!! List the complete model # and I'll look in some more corners.

Yup, it sure is...

I have now actually run MHDD on it and it's "got rid of" 8 serious errors and bad blocks. I am not entirely sure how it has done that, but it has! [bigsmile] However, MHDD also shows just how slow this drive is. A large number of sectors taking between 10 and 50ms to access, and a considerable number taking upto 150ms.

Ben, many thanks for that...

The two UK ones are both ZIF so no good, but the German ones says it's an IDE, although the picture shows a 2.5" drive! However, well worth chasing up.

Am I correct in saying you're based in Germany? I have looked at the ARLT website, but since I cannot read or understand German, I'm having difficulty trying to find an e-mail address or phone number for these guys. Can you help at all please?

ROGER - G0AOZ.

Yes, I am based in Germany, and sure no problem about the contact info...

there is a 120gb version aswell, "120 GB, 1,8", Toshiba MK1214GAH, 2MB Cache" for € 130,94 (incl VAT, which you probably do not have to pay being in the UK, which would mean that it is 19% cheaper) + S&H...

sorry about the ZIF ones, thought that is what you wanted...

NOTE to SELF: READ CAREFULLY... LOL...

Great, many thanks, much appreciated. Will give them a shout on Monday.

Let me know how it goes... and you're always welcome...

Just had a look at Toshiba's website, and I'm reading it that this drive has a ZIF type connector, albeit Tosh describe it as LIF. What you think? I reckon that LIF (Low Insertion Force) and ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) are possibly the same thing... I don't think this is the same animal as the one I'm seeking, i.e. a 44-pin PATA connection, or as Hitachi describe it, a 50-pin connector. (I guess they're including the whole block which accounts for the MASTER/SLAVE pins as well).

sorry about that... misread that there somewhere...

the only ones I found where the MK6015GAA (60gb) & MK8007GAH (80gb), but unfortunately they are hard to find...

so I guess you need to look at eBay there...

I think they (LIF and ZIF) are the same animal...

No need to apologise Ben - yours, and everyone else's efforts to locate a suitable drive are much appreciated.

Glad you agree with me that LIF and ZIF look the same in this context...
