Industrial bar code useage

I working on developing a bar code system for intermodel shipping. I need a permanent bar code label that can with stand the environment of on deck transoceanic shippping. I'm considering engraved metal or a material simular to street signs, Also the labels must be readable from the greatest distance possible. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

we have sucessfully used a laser etching techinique for 2D barcodes in an agressive enrionment. Our particular application required a barcode that could be applied to a uneven surface, be heated to 400deg C twice and then be reread into the system.

the scan sucess rate has been very high. Laser system was also suitably expensive.
