I have a number or documents all in Microsoft word. What I need is to create one index for all these documents. I also don't need the page numbers in the document, just the document number. It is not possible to combine these documents into a master document as they need to be in seperate files, and there are too many of them anyways. How can this be done?

Hi kienna,

Given that you have not had any replies I thought I might make a suggestion.

You can use hyperlinks in a word document to refer to other documents.

For each document type the reference you want to see in the index to the document.

Then highlight this reference and press Ctrl k (or Insert Hyperlink) - you will now have the insert hyperlink window open and you can browse and find your document. Once you have done that you can select OK to exit the window. You should now have a link set up to that document, and you can open that document by clicking on the link.

The one problem I have in using hyperlinks like this is that you often tend to loose your index document when you open your linked document because the hyperlink often opens the new document in place of your index document(You can get back to the index by using the back arrow icon on the Web toolbar in word).

See how you go but if you want to always open your hyperlink in a new window like I like to then you have to modify the hyperlink field by adding '\n' (no quotes) at the end of the hyperlink. This can be done by selecting the hyperlink and the Ctrl+F9 to display the hyperlink field, then go to the end of the field and insert the ' \n' just inside the curly bracket (the field delimiter) and then hightlight the field and press Ctrl+F9 again and then just F9 to update the field.

Good Luck

Thanks for the Reply.

The documents are all in word, and majority is already linked with hyperlinks. My problem is I dont' have one master document that the other ones are linked to. None are really reference documents. They're all like little chapters. Some don't reference another document.
