We have a custom PO database that the indexer kicks off on a couple of times a day. When this happens everyones notes is almost useless. You are lucky to be able to wright an email and using the PO database or any other database is hopeless. We are using notes 6.5. Does anyone have any idea how to limit the amount of resources the indexer takes to run on the PO file. I need to do something, notes is becoming unusable.

Hello,

I would remove the hourly Index and set it to immediate. File, Properties, Full Text tab, Update Frequency "Immediate".

This should reduce the amount of records added and reduce CPU utilization. Does your DB contain a lot of views?

Hope this helps.

Rgds,

John

We do not run a "Full Text Index" on it because it caused problems before. Yes we do have a lot of views.

What harware are you running Domino on? Sounds like you need either more processor grunt or some additional memory.

I'm running ND6 on a dual Xeon 2.8GHz box with 2Gb memory and 73Gb RAID 5 and Domino goes like a rocket with no slowdown at any time.

Hope this helps.

We are looking at this being the problem. We just added a lot of new users and items to the databases and we are on quad 700 Zeon with 8GB memory, Raid 5. It runs great most of the time, but when that indexer kicks off, it tears it up. Thanks.

DocHolden, I am a bit confused. So everyone's mail files are on the same server as the PO database? You don't have this database replicated locally on user's workstations do you? Do you know for sure that the indexer is running against views in the PO database? How many indexers are you running? On a quad, you should be running at least 3, the formula is number of processors minus 1.

The PO file here at corporate is on the server only. We have about 35 field offices that have local copies and they replicate back and forth with the PO file. As far as I know we only have the one indexer running on the PO file. How do I verify and how do I ad more indexers?

Thanks for the help.

So the PO app replicates to 35 other Domino servers? Or individual workstations/laptops at those 35 FOs? You can see how many indexers you have loaded by doing a "sh ta" on the server line. Look for "Indexer" you should see at least 1. If you want more to load on server startup, add this INI param to the Notes.ini: "Updaters=N", N=the number of update tasks you want to load. As I said before if you have a quad processor server, you could load up 3, but you might just want to start at 2 and see how that works.

Keep in mind that if this app is replicating to local workstations, the updating that might happen on the server has nothing to do with the upating that needs to happen locally. If this app is replicated locally to workstations, do all the FOs need ALL the data? You might consider selective replication to each FO. Just a thought.

Only one running. I am going to try the 2 indexer and see if performance improves. The PO file replicates to workstations. They only get the part of the PO file that affects them. Thanks for the help, I will let you know what happens.
