Index singular, plural, and parts of words

I am a fairly new InDesign user. I have written and indexed many books and manuals in Word. I am creating my first index in InDesign and cannot figure out how to make multiple words fall under one heading.

Example: Cheetah, cheetah, and Cheetahs should all fall under one heading: Cheetahs. In MS Word, I would just create a concordance listing cheetah and cheetahs both as the heading Cheetahs. Can I do this in InDesign? I don't want this to be two different entries or event subentries. I tried InDesign help but it wasn't helpful.

Try going to Help/Search and look for "indexing every occurrence of a word".

Thanks jmgalvin, but I tried that. I actually printed out every Help file with the word index in it and none of them refer to my actual situation (as best as I can tell). If I do the 'index every occurrence of a word' and use the word cheetah, it will find every occurrence of cheetah, but not Cheetah or cheetahs. I have been messing around with this all day and can't seem to get it to work. I do appreciate your response though.

I am having the same difficulty.
Also, indesign indexing also seams to be case sensitive, Example: index refernce "Car" does not link an index refernce to same word spelled "car" in the document

I have a list of word to index. About 1000 words. (Called a Indez?) Do i need to import the list into my indesign document and highlight every word and go "ad new reference" 1000 times?, or can i import the list?

The import topics seems to be only from already created indesign indexes?

I just finished a hiking book. I found it easier to simply create my own index from a printed draft of my book instead of using the InDesign software indexing. That avoids your current dilemma. I spent an entire weekend trying to eliminate text frames from my printed draft. No luck.

No, I haven't found an answer to this. I ultimately used InDesign to create the index, marking any instances of a word (Car, car, Cars, cars). Then, I went back and manually combined the page numbers listed under those four headings under one heading (Cars). That was a lot of work. I never thought that I'd miss a Microsoft Word function once I found InDesign, but I can say without a doubt that the indexing function in word is much easier to use.
