I have been looking around for a solution, but have not had any luck.

Currently I have a bunch of word documents that I have saved as HTM files. I have been creating an index by bookmarking and linking them to an index page. This has become very tedious since there are many pages.

I was wondering if there is a way to use bookmarks or field codes to create a hyperlink index for all the pages. You know the way you can do it in Word, but with hyperlinks instead of page numbers.

Myself and others will be adding new pages consistently in the future. I want to use some sort of marking method so I can regenerate the index when I add new pages. Hopefully minimizing time spent on the index and more on other projects.

Does anyone have an idea or some info I can look at to point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Jason

database!

have all the pages stored in a database and then do a simple query and populate a page with the page number (unique id in this case) as links to those pages. when a new page is created add it to the DB with another simple insert and thus creating a dynamic addition to the page with the listing of them.

for something as simple without a high storage need access and asp would be perfect for this.

A database does sound like a good idea. From what I understand the database will hold index numbers for all the pages. Correct?

I know I could setup something like that, but that is not all I want to do. I may not have been clear when I described my index or I am not understanding exactly what you are saying.

I am creating a 'keyword' index not just a page index. All important terms on the page must be linked to the index. This is a help file so when users want to look up a specific idea they can search the alphabetical index to find the term they are looking for.

Will this create a problem with the database suggestion?

From what I can gather you need a Page index and a keyword index??

How have you worked the keyword index??

Is it a list of words which link to the page or are it is used? What about word repetition?

The database Idea defiantly sounds like the way for you to go.

You should be able to setup everything that you need.

I would plan it out carefully so that it is easier to add future functionality.

Yes, I'm creating a Page and Keyword index.

I am bookmarking keywords and keyphrases then linking them to an index page.

Word repetition is solved by adding a descriptive word or two after the keyword. This will distinguish between words in the alphabetical index.

Now on the database...Do I create a database of keyword links? I wanted to use some type of marking method to automatically insert and or create the links.

To me it seems as if I will have to do an equal amount of work inserting the links in the database. Is there a better way? Or am I misunderstanding? Can I search field codes or bookmarks in a document? If so I think I could just add those to a database and hopefully link them at the same time.

Any suggestions?

Does anyone know how MS Word searches a document and finds the Field Codes to create an index? There has to be a way to do it in VB or something. I think all I have to do is modify that routine. Any comments would would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
