index file error status 9/018 2

Hi,

Iam getting errors while rebuilding file using cobol5.0.
The error message is "Error on input file - status 9/018 - record read". I would like to know why this error occurs and also how it can be rectified. I tried using rebuild /d option for it but it still doesnot works. And also tried to convert the file from index to sequential using microfocus workbench but it didnt give the proper result.
