Index.dat files created in user profiles..............

Hi All,

I m having Windows NT4 network with windows NT servers and windows Nt workstations . I m having the roaming profiles for all the users and change permissions are provided on profiles for the users. When they logon to the network it works fine but after some days some files are created in the profiles folder.

e.g

history\History.IE5\Index.dat
history\History.IE5\MSHist01xxxxxxxx\Index.dat
history\History.IE5\MSHist01xxxxxxxx\Index.dat
history\History.IE5\MSHist01xxxxxxxx\Index.dat

There are several files naming same.
We have restricyted the profile storage space for the users to 3 mb. but there files are getting increased and they are facing the problem with saving their profiles. at the logout the error appears "you have exceeded your profile storage space please delete some files or move them to the network location" but they are not able to delete the index.dat files which are there. I tries to delete them from server afetr EOD but there files are not there on server where the profiles are saved.

I just want to stop creation of index.dat files orcan i redirect these files to a temp location. Thanks in advance

Hiya

Index.dat files contain information about websites you have visited, things you have done, cookies you have received, etc. The main purpose, according to Microsoft, is that they speedup browsing by keeping this info nearby. The problem is, that they don’t delete when you clear your temporary internet files! This is because Windows lock those files.

Some people believe these files could be used by MS to monitor your browsing.... the files are difficult to delete from local PCs (has to be done from a script) but it shouldn't be a problem on the server. Have you tried setting up a script to delete folders containing the files every night or when the user logs on? Deleting the files won't do any harm as IE will just create new ones.
