Hi,

I would like to create an index of all the word docs under a given directory including sub-directories. Does anyone know of a tool or method of doing this?

At a command Prompt switch to the directory you want to query and then run:-

dir *.doc /s >c:\filename.txt

switching filename for whatever you want to call it. Thsi will create a text file in c:\ with the data you need.

I've found dir2html which does the job, but it looks ugly. Thanks for your help

Im interested in something similar, but slightly more advanced.

I want to be able to store Word documents on a file share in some directory. Then I want to be able to retrieve them by keyword searches. I'd used the Keywords field of the Summary tab of each document's Properties as the keyword source - I don't need/want fulltext searching.

Ideally I'd like to search on keywords (stuff like q-batch ledger, or maybe even wildcarded like P/DF/1100*) and get back a list of hits. The hits should come back something like a Google search, listing:

The matched keyword.
The document Title and Subject.
Maybe an abstract from the Comments field.
The creation date/time.

I'd want the option of Viewing, Printing, or Getting (a copy of) the document. I don't need a formal check-in/check-out process, and a content managment system is overkill. The main goal is retrieval. I can't use a SharePoint server or I might just do that. SQL Server is out too. It'd probably have to be based on an MDB file for the index.

Anyone seen something simple along these lines?
