Hello! A user in my office has a weird InDesign problem. In the morning the program works just fine, by every other afternoon it goes haywired: the user is simply unable to type Scandinavian characters ä, ö and å (I don't know how all Tek-Tips users see these, but they are a with two dots above, o with two dots and "Swedish o", a with a ring above).

When the problem occures the only way to write words with scands is to copy each Scandinavian character from somewhere in the document and then paste it.

Thsi problem does not effect any other programs installed in the workstation.

Any ideas?

I would guess that the problem is not with InDesign, but with the computer's OS and if the "inmatningsspråk" and "tangentbordslayout" is on S for Swedish. (I don't know if the Swedish letters came out in my quotes)
I am using Windows 2000 Pro (Swedish version) on my computer here in Japan. I can switch between English, Swedish and Japanese when using InDesign 2.
Maybe it is possible that when your friend starts the computer in the morning the system is on the Swedish keyboard and "inmatnings"setting.....but if they open a document created by an English computer it can switch automatically. Then when they start a new document the computer is still switched to the English input!
As I said this is just a wild guess.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check if this could be the problem. We do indeed use Windows XP in Finnish.

The problem is finally solved. Users were creating it themselves. There's a shortcut key for changing Windows default language and the users used the key accidently while typing. Thanks for your tip, anyway. :)
