having problems with clip outs & drop shadows. Everything looks ok when converting to a pdf, but once its gone to printers - a black box appears around the clipped out image.

What level of PDF are you exporting? What version of Acrobat is your printer using? What print settings is your printer using? What RIP is your printer using.

Answers to these questions will solve the issue.

Why is everyone in this forum responding to me as picklefish?

Thankyou for getting back to me....
I'm not technically minded so I hope this info helps

One printer uses : Acrobat 6 (pdf 1.5)
and the other printer I use, uses : Acrobat 4 (pdf 1.3)
same problem using each

Don't know the other answers other than full colour magazine artwork - colours in CMYK, 300 dpi

Have you output your file to Acrobat 5 or higher? Check your settings. Go to File menu/PDF export presets and pick Press. Make sure the Compatablity setting is to 5 - supporting alpha channels and transparency. Acrobat 4 has problems with these.

If you're using Distiller, open it and go to the Settings menu and make a setting that copies Press but is compatable with Ac 5. If printing a postscript file for distilling, select All under Graphics/images/Send Data. Under Advanced, select High Resolution under Transparency Flattener.

You might also try checking your transparency flattening Presets in ID - under Edit menu - set to High resolution.

Try printing it out of ID to see if you get problems. If so, you did something in ID.

After you make your pdf open it and go to the Advanced menu. Select Overprint preview and look at the pdf for problems. Then go to Transparency Flattener preview and see if anything's amiss

thanks for getting back to me....
when I go to transparency flattening preset it is set at high res.

Everything turns grey and the images with the clipped background and a drop shadow have a red solid box around them

thanks

also when I print samples of the pages the drop shadows are fine
