InDesign- Auto index not working

Update preview in the index palette does not update the actual page numbers of my book, only the palette is updating. Does anyone have any suggestions??? This annual handbook was converted from Frame Maker to InDesign and I have found a ton of bugs. What's sure if this was one of them since I'm new to InDesign.

I personally never use the Update Preview button.

Just click Generate Index and that should give you what you need. Whenever you have to update a page number or something, just click Generate Index again and overwrite the old index.
