My InDesign file sizes are too big, typically 150MB +.
Is there something i can do to reduce them. Ok, I have large PSD images placed in the documents but it's a layout application that positions the files. If I copy the elements and past them into a new document the size is ok, then after a few saves it's back to 150Mb +. What's going on?

Try doing a save as. Or export to an .inx file and then reopen the file and resave it. It might be reduced in file size.

If you are doing a lot of heavy photoshop work with PSD files you might want to consider

Edit>Preferences>File Handling

Saving InDesign Files
Change the Preview Size down to the smallest (or uncheck the box if you want to).

This is the Thumbnail that InDesign creates to display the position of the file. The bigger the thumbnail the larger the file size. It does not affect the output of the images. Just the display in InDesign.

Ok, thanks for that. The inxx file was even larger, 189Mb and the exports and resaves still about 150Mb which seems nuts for a layout application document. Makes me almost consider using Quark...well maybe not..

Have you tried the thumbnail size option? I do a 106 page magazine and it's full colour and only 40mb. Perhaps you should flatten your PSDs or something to loosen some space. You can always edit your PSDs later and flatten them and resave them as tiffs at a later stage.

CS3 is quite handy at file replacing. If you use the same image more than once you can replace that image throughout the document with the relink from the Links panel.

Pasting images into InDesign embeds the images & the file size expands accordingly.

Placing the images with links will keep the file size down.
