How do you create a field, which will automatically assign a number to the record? I wish to have a number which will also include the year for example “1/2006”. Also once the year has ended it automatically changes the year and starts from the number 1 again e.g. 1/2007 and so on.

This may depend on a few things, such as the number of users. Have you seen, for example:
Why AutoNumber shouldn't be used in MultiUser databases (And How to ge the Unique Number)
faq700-184

For a much simpler set up, you could use DMax.

If you mean when entering data in a table, rather than a form, I do not think this is possible.

I want to create an autonumber which will also incude the year. but at the end of each year it automatically changes the year as it progresses.

I do not believe that this is possible with autonumber.
