I am trying to use the wildcard character(%) to query on a text field in a large SQL Server 6.5 table and am experiencing very poor performance. Are there any special indexes or techniques I can use to increase performance in this type of query? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer, but I wanted you to know that I went and asked several people to join this forum who may know the answer. So we'll see what happens.

As for SQL Server 6.5 you have no straight solutions to improve performances. You can either buy a third party product to supply full-text indexing functionalities or you can try to develop similar functionalities yourself. SQL Server 7.0 has full-text indexing out of the box, you may want to have a look at it.

Thanks, I will check into SQL Server 7.0
