Migrated a CLIPPER package to a WINDOWS ME new PC.

I got DOS ERROR 4 when opening the 16th file
under Windows ME. So I put a 'SET CLIPPER=F111 /E:0'
line into an AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root directory
and I also put 'FILES=150' into a CONFIG.SYS file
(this worked fine for Win95 and Win98).

But I still get DOS ERROR 4 after booting the system.

How do I increase the file handlers for CLIPPER 5.2
running under WINDOWS ME?

Thanksamundo,
Jim

Open the system.ini file in c:\windows and add this line on the first line
in the 386enh section:

PerVmFiles=150

For your trouble, look at this site:
1 Q269030 - How to Increase Available File Handles for MS-DOS-Based Programs in Windows Millennium Edition
Extracto:Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) only parses the Config.sys file for environment variables; therefore, settings used by MS-DOS-based programs running in Windows Me are not set inside the Config.sys file.

The file handle solution was a big help. I also need help with Clipper 5.2 running under Windows ME. I get the following error:

BASE 5300 MEMORY LOW

Under Windows 98 we use some memory management settings in the config.sys file...

Everytime we reboot the machine it wipes out the config.sys file.

You can also download a patch from

(attention! between mfd4life and 2000 there is an underscore!)

After installing above mentioned pad it becomes possible again to use autoexec.bat en config.sys with settings conform W98...
