On my secondary 100Gb drive I deleted a Norton Ghost 20Gb backup file and now the drive shows the folder gone (and is not in recylcer) but the reported free space is too low by the 20Gb. I turned on "show hidden files" also. Anyone know how to get the drive/Win XP Home to report the correct free space? I am using Norton Ghost ver 9 and have all current updates to Win XP. Used hard drive over network for off-platform backup. Is there something in Win XP that will not work correctly with such huge files? I have e-mailed both Symantec and Western Digital to see what they advise. Tried MS Win XP site to no avail.

Since you are already talking about reformatting you might consider using the /f with chkdsk.

The ? is probably due to the fact the System Volume Information folder is not accessible. It's the same on my NTFS formatted C: drive. Only the object SYSTEM has rights to this folder.

I am currently out of ideas. Explorer and extensions of lt, like dfolder, are not seeing things that chkdsk and drive properties are.

duane123,

I thought you said you disabled System Restore on drive F:? If so, then the System Volume Information folder should go away (or at least give you the ability to delete it).

System Restore places its restore points into that location. It would make a lot of sense if that's where your missing drive space is...

I had turned restore back on since I didn't want to forget it. Now with it off and norton util off, both fdisk and JDiskreport all show the full 73.7 Gb like the win explore drive properties. The missing 20Gb is in a folder called RECYCLER (which I know nothing about since it doesn't show up in the norton protected recycle bin). Here is the new fdisk size printout (matching the JDiskreport).

How do I go about getting rid of the 20.9Gb in the "Recyler" since Win Explorer doesn't show it nor does the recycle bin?

Under Windows NT/2000/XP, the Recycle Bin is labeled as a folder called RECYCLER. You should have no problems emptying it. All that's contained there are recently deleted files, or files that Norton is backing up.

If you right-click your Recycle Bin on your desktop and go to Properties, do you see a tab called "Norton Protection"? You should.

On this tab, select the F: drive and click "Empty Protected Files".

The Recycler folder is created on NTFS formatted drives and will contain a Recycle Bin for each user that logs into XP. This is a throwback to NT days.

So that missing 20GB has been bouncing back and forth between the Recycler and System Volume Information folders.

I'll have to remember that the System Volume Information folder on a NTFS drive may contain data not accounted for by Explorer.

Good catch, cdogg.

Thanks all - my F: drive now shows under Win Explorer that I have 57.2Gb used and 42.8Gb free!! Not sure I understand the difference between Recycle bin (which never showed the 20Gb of deleted Ghost file) and the "Recyler" that would not show up under Win Explorer but DID show up under fdisk and JDiskreport. Again thanks.
