Inconsistent GAL

One exchange server in the site is missing numerous addresses in it's GAL. I ran consistency check on the problem server and the home server for one of the missing mailboxes. That did not resolve the problem. Any suggestions on how to get the directory files back in sync would be appreciated. We are running exchange 5.5 with SP4. Problem mailbox does show up on numerous other servers in the site.

What does the event log say when you run a DS update for these servers? "Paranoia is reality on a finer scale...."

By DS Update, do you mean Consistency Check or some other function. Consistency check logs a starting check message and a succesfully completed message, with no errors or other messages.

I tried running the directory update and replace all functions. Neither corrected the problem. I tried moving one of the pronlem mailboxes and that did not resolve the problem either. The mailbox does appear under mailbox resources now and did not before, but when I select it, it says ddddirectory information is not available.

It definitely sounds like a Directory Replication problem. Try stopping\starting the exchange directory service on the server that's missing the entries. Then try running a directory replication (run it on the problem server, pulling from the other server).

If that fails I would reboot the problem server and try again.

Thanks. I will give that a try this weekend. Shutting down directory, also shuts down exchange IS, so I need to wait until the weekend.

I have tried starting/stopping exchange and rebooting. It appears it applies recent updates if exchange is stopped and started. But after being started, nothing gets through. I am going to do a test to confirm this Sunday and than place a call to MS. It appears we may have a bad directory file on the server. Wierd thin is the lack of errors or warnings. I turned on DS logging functions at problem server and a test server in the same site. Changes do not get through in either direction, but neither server shows any errors.

Hi there,

Found your thread in a keyword search. We have exactly the same issue with one of our Public folder servers.

In the GAL are old entries which have long been deleted from the home mailbox server.

The problem arrises when a new mailbox is created and is allocated a directory name which has previously been deleted.

Any reference to the new recipient on the affected server resolves as the old recipient.
This arrises when allocating the recipient permissions to public folders on the affected server.

The old recipient is present in the GAL.
The new recipient is not present in the GAL.

A full update of the directory does not return any errors and completes successfully. However it does not sort out the problem.

Knowledge consistency also completes successfully.

Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

Regards
