so over the last few days i've been successful with programming my DIDS within target lines to the user sets.

my question is this:

when a call comes in on the PRI, what happens first? my target line looks for the my rec'd#s and it i get the calls, but does the call go somewhere first? once the call comes in does the switch first go through the target lines before passing on the call to the receptionist?

i know it's more complicated than this, but i was just looking for the basics of call handling on a norstar.

The provider sends you digits down the pipe. You have these digits programmed as the received digits of the target line. The call is then sent to the extension that has the target line programmed to it.

DigitelD - I understand that the carrier will send the digits and my target line is programmed to receive those digits, but is there something in the switch that will send some type of broadcast to the lines on the switch to say ' who does this belong to" and if it doesn't belong to anyone I will send it to the receptionist? maybe my network background is hurting me here, but I figured there was some for of communication between the switch and the target lines when the call comes in...

If there is a target line created for a DID and there is no phone associated with it, it will ring at the prime set for that target line. Remember that with the system even though it is a "computer" it does not have routng protocols going on. Maybe someone can dive deeper into this than I can but all I can say is that the received digits come in and is compared to the target lines received digits. If there is a match then it rings on the associated phone or the prime set.

Target lines are not physical lines, they are a software construct. Essentially they are a table in a database. When you program target lines you are simply filling in fields in the database table. When a call comes the system looks for a match in the table. If it finds one it uses the extension number as a pointer as to where to send the call. If no match is found it uses the default pointer which is the prime set.

Back to if no phone is connected and where doe's the call go,if the prime for the PRI trunks are the recept it will send it there thru the I/C key.If no prime is on the trunks the call will not ring .Depending on the CO you might get a recording or get dead air of a busy tone.
