Incoming calls go to dial tone on Nortel MICS-XC 7.0

I have a Norstar MICS-XC 7.0 system, to which I want to add an analog line for incoming calls (as we've been having service provider issues with our PRI lines, and we're in a rural area with poor broadband service).

When I call into the analog line, it rings once, then goes to a dial tone, and I can dial an internal extension # and it will ring. I don't know why it goes to a dial tone, instead of just ringing the prime set.

I've found the analog line ports in NRU and our punch block, and I've punched a phone line onto Line061, and in NRU, it's set as:

Trunk type = Loop
Line type = Pool C
Dial mode = Tone
Distinct rings in use = None
Distinct ring = None
Prime set = DN 500
Auto privacy = Y
Trunk mode = Unspr
Link at CO = N
Use auxiliary ringer = N
Full autohold = N
Loss Package = Medium CO

Trunk mode needs to be supervised.Remove jumper from co#61 & clip your butt set to jumper & call number & see what happens

Sounds like that line is set for DISA.
I am not familiar enough to advise how to change it though.

Changing Trunk mode between Supervised and Unspr for that line in NRU does not seem to have any effect. When calling through that phone line, it rings once and then I get the dial tone.
If I disconnect that line from the demarcation and initiate a call from my tester, I hear the relay in the Norstar clicking as it picks up the line, and I get a dial tone on my tester.

When I set Trunk Mode to Supervised, I get the option for Answer mode = Auto, and Answer with DISA = No, but calling in still ends up with a dial tone. Very odd.

I also thinking DISA...there is that missing setting "Ans Mode" not posted in the list above in the same section wich should be changed from "Auto" to "Manual". Maybe it's old programming and was DISA back in the day.

1. Go to terminals and sets > DN 500
Make LINE 061 appear and Ring

2. If you have an Auto attendant/CCR setup in the voice mail, Change Line 061 Answer to No.

We don't have an AA/CCR, at least not used since I joined the company. PRI lines all go to x500, and after hours it goes to the general delivery voicemail. We do have a "Voice Applications" module, but I think that is the voicemail system.

Your note did give me an idea to double check the port status when I was calling in, and I noticed it was staying "Idle", which lead me to discover whoever did our punch block inverted the pairs for lines 61 & 63, which I have now corrected.

Line 061 is now set up under Trunk/line data as:

Trunk type = Loop
Line type = Pool C
Dial mode = Tone
Disting rings in use = None
Distring ring = None
Prime set = DN 500
Auto privacy = Y
Trunk mode = Super
Answer mode = Manual
Link at CO = N
User aux ringer = N
Full autohold = N
Loss Package = Medium CO

And under DN 500, under Line Access, Line assignment, there's Line 061 set as "App&Ring", as well as Line 250 (the line # where DN 500 is punched in).

Now when I call in, x500 rings once, then stops and I get an AA prompting me "Using the dial pad, please enter the extension you wish to call."

I tried to switch from Answer mode = Manual to Auto, and Answer with DISA = N, but it still does the same thing.

I did confirm when I call in, it shows Line061 going from Idle to busy, so I know for sure I got the right line this time.

I missed that post, but it should be set to "Manual" in your case.

You should always program lines as "Supervised: Yes" so that the line will free up when voicemail(or caller) or sometimes a phone hangs up the call otherwise it may hang the line a little too long or indefinitely which would require a reboot or quick removal and reconnect of the CO jumper.

So now we have gone from dial tone to a greeting answering.
I guess they had copper lines once upon a time.

Do Feature 985 to see voicemails DN, if it's 500 then now you know 500 is the NAM's DN.

You can also just press the line in use and it will tell you what name or DN is using it.

The Norstar will not tell the NAM to answer, it will ignore the Appear & Ring etc, best to leave no line assigned to it's DN, instead go into the NAM:
Go into Auto Attendant settings of the NAM (Norstar Applications Module which is voicemail) under AA/Lines, 061 and set the parameters.

While your at it, when you first log into the NAM, press 9 to see the version and note it down so you can post it in future.

Curious - Is there a RAD onsite? do Feature 9** and see if it asks for a password.

One tip for lines - In the case where the line is ringing at an unknown device aside from voicemail, to save time troubleshooting, make the line "Private" to say, receptions DN, it will erase any line appearance or ringing at all devices, then change it back to "Public" and re-assign the devices that should have that line.

Does this change take effect immediately? I changed it to Answer mode = Auto, Answer with DISA = N, and then clicked another line and came back just to make sure the settings got saved, and when I call in, I still get the system prompt asking me to enter the extension I wish to call (and fyi this is the Nortel/PBX voice, not a recorded auto attendant).

On the desk phone x500, doing feature 985 shows "Set 303", and this is the same for all our desk phones. 303 is the extension of the voice mail module.

Yes, I am going through the RAD/FastRAD with NRU on my laptop.

Before you replied, I tried changing the "Line type" through all the modes (Public, Private to: 500, Pool A, B, C,...) and then called about ~5 seconds after changing the setting, and in every case I still end up with the message asking to dial the extension I want to reach.

I appreciate everyone trying to help me, this is the weirdest situation I've ever seen dealing with these Norstar systems.

I launched the Nortel Voice Mail Manager and did as you suggested, under Auto-Attendant, Lines, Line 061 was set to Answer = Yes, I changed it to Answer = No, and now DN 500 just rings until someone answers or falls into x500's voicemail, as I wanted.

Thank you!!!

Your welcome!

Setting Answer mode = Manual is the default, I only suggested to put it back to Manual so you don't run into problems like "dial tone".

Line-Private- as I mentioned It does not effect the voicemail and why vmail will still answer because it has it's own way or answering lines, it's only for situations when you do not know where that device is or what device has that line assigned and is fast way to remove a line from ALL sets.

FYI for BCM -
BCM via BEM, Lines/Active Lines/Assigned DN's to view what sets have that particular line.

Cheers
