I have set-up aliases for our users under the "User Name" section. Yet when I send an e-mail to the alias address the message bounces back. I disabled "Smart Host is used for all local internet domain recipients" on the server configurations to cut down on the SPAM. But now it appears that the Aliases no longer work. Is there something else I need to enable or check?

Thanks In Advanced,
BH2

I was mistaken the "Smart Host is used for all local internet domain recipients" was always disabled. But the problem of the Aliases not working still exist. Can anybody give me some clues what to check? I already searched the Admin Help but there was nothing there.

check the configuration document for the server that receives inbound smtp mail.

the router/smtp - basics (I think it is) there's a field about address lookup, which has the following options,

local part only, fullname only fullname then local part.

if it's on fullname only it requires a full match of the complete address: name@somedomain.tld. instead of just looking at the part infront of the @ sign

if you use local part only, it'll only look at the stuff in front of the @ sign (replacing spaces with _ or %).

if you set it to fullname, then lcal part, domino looks for the full internet address first, and if it can't find it, it'll try to find a match based on the part in front of the @ sign. including aliases.

I have the Address lookup set to "Fullname then Local Part" and it still does not work. Even after restarting the server. I now have people calling in saying that their e-mail log in will not accept the First initial Last name as their log on(Ex:JSmith) but it will accept John Smith as the log on. Any other ideas?

the problem with web users not being able to authenticate using their shortname/alias as username is controlled in the server document's Security page.

Web Server Access
Web server authentication: More name variations with lower security

You probably have this one set to Fewer name variations with higher security.

With this setting enabled it'll only accept the full name for authentication.

Thanks Woonjas. For some reason the TextTip help made me think that with the higher security setting it would still accept anything in the aliases group.... Thanks again for the help.

PS you dont happen to know why when I set the Recipient name lookup to Exhaustively check all address books, I still do not get a complete search performed. I have the company Networked address book and my own. But it never searches past my own if I have a Richard in the address book and a Richard in the company address book. It will only auto fill the richard from my address book.

weird. and it doesn't even prompt you about finding multiple matches when you click on send?

which version of the notes client are you using?

No it does not prompt me at all.
I am using client version 5.0.10 March 22, 2002.

when you say your own address book, do you mean the one on your pc or the server.

If it's on the server you have to type:
set configuration names=names.nsf,2ndaddressbook.nsf

If it's local it should always search that one first.

hope that helps

chris

I have my mail preferences pointing to both address books. The First address book is the public company address book stored on the server. The second is my own personal address book stored localy on my machine.

Oops. I've just re read your post.
the way notes works is that it stops searching on the first match. if you have 2 richards it will find the local one first. but if the surnames are different it should if you keep typing search the public address book.

this is a bit of a pain with notes, maybee it will be fixed in ver 6.

It will stop even when I set the Recipient name lookup to Exhaustively check all address books?

I have just tried it, when exustivley check is set, if it finds a duplicate it pops up a box to prompt as to which you wish to use.
