in ms paint on windows 2000 i can't save a file as a jpg. But on some other machines i can. How do i get the jpg option to be in the save as type field?

You can try copying the mspaint.exe file from a computer with the same OS on which mspaint actually works.

As far as I know, the file filters are part of the program code and there is no way to turn them on or off in mspaint.

If you don't have at least SP3 you might consider installing at least SP3. The extra file types may have been added in a SP.
