In Design Books and Master Pages 1

I have a book with several chapters (documents) in it, and want to revise the page headers, which are contained in master pages in each document.

Is there a way to set up a book so that changing the master pages once will apply the revisions to all docs in the book?

I know I can synchronize the styles, but what about master pages?

...CS2 won't do this, CS3 will allow this now. CS2 you will have to do it manually...

...there are a few extra's in CS3 now for syncing, they are:

table styles
cell styles
numbered lists
text variables
master pages

You can synchronize master pages in a book...in CS2 and CS3. Here's some online info on that:

Can InDesign handle very long documents, such as 100 - 200 pages, without problems with corrupted files?

These docs have lots of photos and captions.

Or is it advisable to break them into shorter docs? If so, how long can the doc be without problems?

...the longer the document the slower the sync will be, this however depends on the complexity of your book and speed of your computer...

...splitting into smaller chunks is more efficient. Best to work on a back up copy to avoid any problems as undo or revert to save is limited to say the least in the book feature so care needs to be taken...

...ekwoman posted a link to cs3 help above, i'm yet to know how in cs2 you can sync master pages though, as this option isn't available in the sync options dialog...

My mistake Andrew...yes that feature is CS 3 only. I often can't remember what features were there and since when (especially if I don't use it often like this one). I used my handy reference chart and it said this feature was "improved" in CS 3...guess they meant book synching generally...synching master pages is new to CS3.

Thanks for clearing that up. That being said, I haven't had problems with documents that were 300 plus pages...but like Andrew said, it can slow the file down, even more so when synching comes into play.

...yes, i know the feeling, it's tricky to keep up with all these features being added at times, by far the most impressive addition to CS3 is within illustrator (live color) and photoshop (3D textures and smart filters)...

...how far will this all go i wonder?

...could there be a day when we won't require a keyboard or a mouse, and work with computers with purely thought alone?

Thank you for the wonderful help! May I ask one more question?

I am creating a 2-page spread of master pages and applying it to my document. I have defined my margins as the same for top, bottom, inside, and outside. Then, I have set my gutter at 4p.

I expect to see pages 2-3 print with identical margins but more space on the right side of page 2 and more space on the left side of page 3. That is my understanding of how a gutter functions--it's a little extra white space where the binding goes.

However, my pages ALL print with a little extra space on the right side. So my even pages have a nice gutter and my odd pages have an extra-wide outside margin.

Can you please tell me where my misunderstanding is????? MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE!!!!
