I'm currently on the road at a new facility my organization has purchased. They decided that they wanted the 10 machines at this facility to VPN back to our network over the Internet.

To make a long story short, I cannot get the VPN to connect to my business network from the facility. However, people from our other facilities have been able to VPN in to our server without problem and can locally VPN to the server.

When I attempt to connect from this facility, I get the standard messages and it gets all the way to "Verfiying username and password..." and then it just hangs and drops and gives me one of two error messages: Error 619 (A connection with the remote computer could not be established) and 721 (Remote Computer Did Not Respond).

I also performed the trace as I had read elsewhere but it just looks like nothing to me:

See a lot of config requests for the same thing with NAKs from the client end.

This means that your server is requiring something that your client is not configured to handle. The output would tell you exactly what is missing, but I don't have time to dig into translating the codes right now. Perhaps someone else will come along that is a bit better at the translation.

You could start by checking all of the settings. Pay special attention to the Networking tab -- do you have all of the needed protocols bound there.

Another option would be to install ethereal on the client. It translates all of the packets, so you could highlight one of the LCP config requests and see exactly what the server is requesting that you are rejecting. It's a wonderful little program, see and download for free. I find that it has made me lazy, there was a time when I could translate the negotiations without thinking quite so much :)

Failing that, what are you using for a server, what is the client in question (including version or service packs), and what are you using for a router on the client side?

Thanks for the replies guys.

@mhkwood: I downloaded Ethereal and tried to use it, but it said that the trace log was not readable, so I pretty much gave up on it after that.

The servers here are Windows 2000 Advanced Server with the latest service packs and the clients are Windows 2000 with SP3/SP4 and Windows XP with SP1. I've read about some problems people are blaming the OS for, but I don't think these are OS-related since I have 2K Pro SP3/SP4 machines connecting from our other remote offices. Also, all of the clients are configured the exact same way, so I crossed that off my list as well.

The router on the client side is not owned by us, however, they gave us IPs that were unrestricted on the outside of their firewall.

@technome: Thanks for the heads up on the black hole routers, however my ISP and most now block ping and traceroute traffic because of DoS problems. That said, attempting to find if there is a black hole router would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

@everyone: Anyone else have anything? Please!

Ethereal is not meant to read the trace log. It can read a TCP/IP dump, but the best thing to do would be set it to do a live capture and try the connection again. It will catch more than what is in the trace log, but it will also have the LCP packets. If you highlight one of the LCP packets and expand the tree fully, it will tell you what configuration parameters are being requested.

I also don't think that your problem is OS related, as you seem to have a variety that are having the same problem if I understand correctly. On the other side of that, it is not safe to assume that because one W2K machine SP4 is able to connect that another SP4 should connect fine. Sometimes applying SP4 really messes up DUN and VPN connection, but it is not consistent.

I don't think you have a core connectivity problem between the client and server, either. If you were seeing LCP requests without an ACK or NAK, that might be the case, but you are seeing a NAK so the traffic is getting through.

Your client is not configured to comply with something that the server is requiring. I know you have checked the connection settings to make sure everything is the same on the problem clients as known working clients, but it is almost impossible to check everything. There are settings in several places (including the registry) that control how the client behaves, so without knowing what is being kicked back it's really hard to fix it.
