If I reinstall Win98SE on top of itself, what will happen to the windows updates and patch, will it be removed? How about the manually edited registry entries, will it be corrected into Windows default?

Thats a tuff question. It has been a while since I even loaded a Windows 98 system. I think you wil have to reinstall ANY patches and updates and redo the registry entries. I cant remember. Reloading 98 will cause it to replace existing files with ones it is loading. So I think you will have to redo all the other stuff. James Collins

Hello JonathanB:

It's a really tuff question. Results are often mixed. Sometimes you can restore some of the updates from msinfo32>tools>version conflict manager. The catch is: how do you know that the restoration will bring back only uncorrupted files? You might bring back the problems that caused you to overwrite in the first place.

We'll I'm finished reinstalling on top of win98SE. The MIE6 and DirectX were unchanged. But the patches were gone. And so with some manually modified reg entries... just for those who want to know.
