improper playing of Radio via WMP 7

PLAYING radio via wmp produces sound bursts of about 3 secs or so, sometimes get discordent burst of noise, sometimes freezes the pc.
NB stations that use realone player work fine. cds play and record ok.
i am using wmp7, upgraded to wmp9 with no effect
my pc is speed 1700/256 m mem.dvd-rom, cd rewriter/windows 98se/56k dial up connection. i presume that i'm missing something that wmp needs ? advice appreciated.

ps microsoft wmp site suggested removing udp from wmp protocols no effect
