Importing high-resolution files into FrameMaker

Could anyone please advise me on the best way to import high-resolution jpegs into FrameMaker?

As my documents will be bounced around several different locations, they ideally need to be embedded in the file, not linked from a central source. I'm using the "file" and "import" commands to place my pictures.

However, I've noticed that when I close the document, FrameMaker does not compress the embedded picture as happens in many other applications (ie: Word). Adding only a few high resolution pictures means that I quickly end up with 7 or 8 MB file - which can cause problems when emailing, or opening on a slower machine.

I know I can always convert to pdf to crush the fle size, but ideally I want to send the FrameMaker file. I'm sure there must be an easy solution - does anyone know what it is?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I really can't think of many good ways to help. Can you do any of the following:

* have all the users access a common graphics folder than contains the graphics?

* distribute the document without the graphics showing? (are the graphics necessary for distribution?)

* store a referenced graphic in the same folder as the Frame file, zip the files, and distribute the ZIP file?

I know it's not much help, but it's a place to start.

Thanks Rick,

It looks like a shared graphics folder is the way to go.

I work for a large British multinational, with two different IT networks, so setting up shared folders across all of the sites is a bit tricky - but we're just going to have to do it!

Graphics embedded into FM documents are never compressed, unfortunately. They are "converted" to a FrameMaker native bitmap format and don't retain the original file attributes or format. (Try to extract one to another program and you'll see what I mean.) OLE Pasted objects are, of course, somewhat different.

In effect, you are filtering your JPEGS (or GIFS or WMFs) into FrameMaker proprietary format when you import them.
