Importing from excel

I've imported excel xls files dozens of times into vfp but for some reason having trouble. Doesn't matter if I use a wizard or just a command. Also is happening on two machines--one at work gets an error message saying it can't write to a temporary file. At home it just shuts VFP down saying there is an error in SP2.

I'm not writing to a protected or program files directory.

I can also import the excel file into Access with no trouble!

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Generally, when I have problems importing an Excel file, I save it as a CSV and import that instead. Failing that, try saving it in Office 97 format and see if that works for you.

You say youv've successfully imported from Excel before, but you can't do it now. So, the obvious question is: What's different this time?

Is it a particular workbook that's causing the problem? If so, how is it different from the workbooks that you've successfully imported?

Are you using a different version of VFP this time? Or was the workbook saved with a different version of Excel? Or is it a different version of Windows?

Trying to identify the difference is a possible first step towards solving the problem.

Another thought, is it a workbook - does it have more than one worksheet? Does it open on the wrong one?

thanks to all--it was just a vanilla 97-03 format and I'm going with the hint of just turning the data into csv format. Seems to work fine.

I would say forget using "import" command for Excel.

Can't argue with that - except it would have been nice to know what caused the problem.
