I am having a problem importing any file types into Access '97. When I click on Import, the only file types I have in the Files of Type drop down list are Access and ODBC. Does anyone know what I have to do to add text, Excel and other file types to the list?

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office but it didn't help. I tried a custom install and found under Data Access, an option for Excel and text files, but it says that the option is already installed and can't be removed. I have also tried adding ODBC connections for Excel but it didn't help any. This problem is happening on multiple machines as well.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hello NHogan --

When I had a problem with finding the correct file type for imports I had to re-register the associated .dll files.

- Open 2 Explorer Windows
- In Explorer Window #1, search for msexcl35.dll.
- In Explorer Window #2, search for regsrv32.exe
- Drag and drop the msexcl35.dll file onto the regsrv32.exe

You should see a success message registering the dll.

For the text file type I believe the .dll is named mstext35.dll.

Hope this works for you.
