Also posted this on the MS office board, but thought I would cross post to here...

I found a card for a company called Kemetech ( that says they can take reports from AS/400 spool files and convert them over to Excel files.

I was wondering if there was a way to easily do this with text files (they convert to text if I move them from the AS/400 to my PC).

Aside from importing text is there a way to get all the data in it's rightful place? What I'm looking for is a starting guide to doing something like this from scratch. J.R. Juiliano

You can easily convert to text (CPYSPLF). Java can easily grab the data.

...there are many options. What where you thinking? Mike Wills

Hey,

As far as pulling the data I can just use CA Express and copy over the file to text.

We have a client that is really reluctant to get anything on paper; they'd rather have the data in an Excel format where they can tweak it. It doesn't make much sense to us, but hey, what usually does?

Simple things like pre-formatted financial reports with report headers, categories and subcategories. If we can just pull this data from the reports instead of transcribing them we might have something useful for this Kemetech software. But then again, if there is something easily developed I would love to hear about options.

Thanks., J.R. Juiliano

You may want to look at a product like InfoWEB or something similar. We have a "Server" running on the 400 that copies spool files to ascii test files in the IFS using cpysplf, then InfoWEB downloads them via NFS and posts them to the web. Then they can be downloaded, emailed, viewed on the web, etc. The master copy on the server cannot be modified by the users, thus is usually sufficient for record retention purposes, etc. Check out for more info. I know there are similar products out there, I just don't know the names. They are relatively inexpensive, and can usually be justified by how much paper will be saved.

Another thing to take a look at is Operations Navigator withing Client Access Express. You can find your printed output from within Ops Navigator, copy and paste a spool file to a text file on your desktop, hard drive, or network drive.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
