How important is being certified (A+) as it pertains to getting a good job in this field?

This really depends what type of job you are applying for.
As a boss, I can tell you that it helps get your foot in the door.
Many human resource people have no other way of telling whether or not you can do the job, and lots of companies require some type of cert these days.

Have a look at some job postings that are similar to what you might be looking for.
Then look at the requirements.
That will give you your answer.

Hope this helps! Kimber

Certification demonstrates your commitment to your chosen field of study. It provides third party verification of your skills. It differentiates you from people who are not certified. It demonstrates your commitment to continuing professional developement because certification is an on-going process. A+ and N+ are entry level certs. You can't stop there. They simply open the door to more advanced certs. They look good on a resume. I could go on...

A+,N+,S+,L+,I+,CFOT,CCNT,ISA CCST3

I work at a state university. Even here the certifications are fast becoming a requirement in a lot of IT jobs. We're usually a little behind the business/private enterprise sector. But with certifications, it seemed to become important quickly. I have to get some certifications under my belt so I can compete on campus for the IT jobs.

I would have to agree with glister. Any cert is a plus but the Comptia's are definately entry level. If you plan on a career in IT definately look into furthering your cert level and remember that it will be an ongoing battle.

Good luck to you...

A+, Network+, Server+, MCP, MCSA

Certs are great, but they are only a peice of the puzzle in getting a job today. Learn learn learn!!! Expand your knowledge into programming, technical support, web support, Cisco and so on... The more you know, the more valuable you will be. Can you honestly tell people that you can replace 2, 3, or even 4 people at their company?

But, what getting a job comes down to is sales, can you sell yourself better than the other applicants?

I always advise people to earn certs if they can afford it or just learn the skills required to past the tests if they cannot.

Certs are like good hygine, they may not win you the job but it will certainly help.

In today's market it will come down to a couple of things:

1) Your skill set. Does it match the job you are applying for?

2) Your experence. Do you have the most experence of everyone that is applying?

3) Your learning ablility. This is closely tied to experence, lets say you have only about a year of work experence but you prove to the manager that you have great potential to grow and improve quickly. This can make you far more valuable then someone that has more experence than you but is limited in their learning ablility.

4) Certs. Some managers LOVE certs. They refuse to hire people who don't have them...

5) First impressions. Do you make a good first impression? Does the manager think she and her staff can work well with you? How do you communicate? Do you listen?

6) Cost savings or profit increase. If you can save the company money or make them more, this will make you very valuable. Companies don't want to hire cost centers, they want an investment. Can you out pony the other applicants?

Personaly I belive #3 is the most important, if I can't teach you, then I don't need you. But then again, I haven't been responsible for hiring people since I changed jobs :) CJ
