My system is hosed and I need to import some .reg files from the command console. I tried from the recovery console but it will not let me run any program (regedit.exe) other than the commands it supports. I thought about booting from a WIN98 disk but then it would not read from my NTFS drive.

I do have the option to use FIXMBR or FIXBOOT but i'm not sure what these will do.

You can't do it from the command console, but there may be other ways to do some of it. You could use another machine to boot win2k and then possibly load the registry hives on the other machine's drive into a regedit or resplenant registrar for editing. There are hack programs around like CIA Commander that can let you edit a single key at a time on a machine's registry. Also lets you reset administrator password, etc. For around $200 you can buy ERD System Recovery CD from Sysinternals.com. This CD will let you boot up from the CD itself into its own operating system. It will read and write NTFS drives, edit the registry, etc etc.

You may not be hosed yet, but you will likely have to spend some money to find out a definitive answer.

You can however try some things:

. if you boot in a XP Preinstall Environment (WinPE) there are registry tools available at that point. An excellent example, freeware, that might help:
. Microsoft itself offers something similar, in which it proffers the XP Recovery Console essentially as a registry repair tool for Win2k:
