Would NBU be able to recover catalog backups of a previous version? I'm asking this if one makes a clean install instead of upgrading and then tries to use bprecover to read catalog backups of the previous version.

Why not avoid this issue and do a clean install of NetBackup with the version that the catalog contains and then do the bprecover. After that, then you should be able to upgrade the "recovered" Netbackup to the newer version.

Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and that is truth.

From 3.x to 4.x, and from 4.x to 5.x. We did just do a fresh install of NBU on new hardware and then bprecover the previous catalog without any problem, it is not supported by Veritas to do it this way. Our reasoning for upgrading in that manner was to keep the backout quick and clean, just revert back to the old hardware. From 5.x to 6.x, the file structure of the catalog data is different. The method Bob described is supported, as well as, new build and bpimport the media from previous version, which is definately something I would not want to do for more than a few active media.
