Immiediate software install...How do I...

Once I have the package created and the Advertisment assigned, how can I 'force' the advertised package to immeitiately be pushed to the chosen collection? I've looked in the books and clicked around but can't find anything that would allow me to send the software immeidaitely to the clients.

Create an advertisement and then set the Advertisement Start time to "AS SOON AS POSSIBLE".

Create an advertisement. Click the Schedule tab. Add a MANDITORY Assignment. then choose "Assign immediately after this event"

I tried that, but it still seemed very slow to distribute.

Ok I know office is a large package (about 617Meg), but should it take over 4 hours once the package/advertisment are setup as 'run as soon as possible'? I had set office 2k3 to install this way at approximate 1pm on Friday and it hadn't been installed on my test client by 5pm. It did install sometime over the weekend though.

That just seemed a little slow to me.

Advertisment time was current and the Mandatory was set to 'as soon as possible'.

I'll get it figured out.

A few things to be aware of.

1) When you create an Advertisement, the advertisement start time is based off of the clients time. So if the client has the wrong time, the advertisement may start at an unexpected time. Time synchronization is very important.

2) If you are using the BITs feature of SMS 2003, you may find that it will take time for the clients to download the package locally before running the package. The BITS download feature is great, especially for large packages. BITS download will copy the installation package directlry to each client....this way, the SMS client doesn't have to perform the installation over the network. However, you will have to plan out your installs more carefully. ....and allow for time to download the packages.

3) overloading your distribution points, if you are deploying a huge package like office, you may want to verify that you have more then one distribution point. This will help handle the load on the server and make it possible for many distributions.

4) it takes the client up to an hour to refresh its SMS policies. So, it could take up to an hour for the clients to realize they have a new advertisement to run. To make things happen quicker, go into your site settings and make the client look to the SMS site more frequently. Like every 15 minutes.

That is more of what I was looking for. The office install is big I know, it was only going on one machine at the time though. BITS is enabled.

It was mainly the refresh of the SMS policies I wanted to work around if need be.

I can easily see situations where I'd need to have a piece of software out faster than the client refreshes the policies.
