imapd running but rejecting logins

I have imapd running and responding to imap4 client requests (my imap4 client has a monitor feature that shows the imapd on linux is running and ready) but any user logins are rejected with "a004 NO LOGIN failed"

What else do I need to do to start using imap4 on linux.

I have mandrake 7.2 with all the current RPMS.

login as root and execute sendmail -I to initialize the sendmail system...then aok!
