Images in tables - spacing makes no sense!

I got a problem with an HTML email thats eluding me.

Here is my email as is:

Basically my problem is I made the second one, but apparently Outlook 2007 won't render background images in tables or divs.
So I spliced the images and made the second one, but now I can't get the images to lineup. I made the BG green so you can see what I mean easily.
The tables have no cellspacing or padding, and even if I define exact height and widths for each cell there are still spaces. I'm completely stumped.

Any ideas? I don't ever make HTML emails so I'm not used to designing in the old fashioned table ways instead of divs and other modern techniques.
I gotta be missing something really basic here...

Edit: I should add this is in IE and Firefox, and I've used Firebug and can't seem to find the issue there either.
