ImageReady vs After Effects.

can you be a little more specific? Does image ready use layers if so are you only selecting one of the layers when importing?
are you compressing the image? what format is it when exported from imageready?

Say Layer 1 is you target layer. Create a new empty layer.
Hit CTRL-Shift-E to Merge Visible layers. When Layer 1 is merged with the empty layer, nothing changes except your layer effects will disappear. Now you can export to AE.
For some reason AE doesnt read layer styles...
