Image wont fit to box QuarkXpress 6

Hi, I am having a problem with images fitting to box in QuarkXpress 6. I am taking in a photograph from a digital camera with no adjustments made but it wont fit into a box as small as 5mm x 5mm. It is not just one image either as had happened with alot of others. if I reduce the size by half of the image in photoshop it will import properly but I dont want to have to do this as it will reduce quality. Any ideas?? Any help much appreciated.

Reducing the image size in Photoshop is the way to go. But just change the document size, (tick scale styles, constrain proportions and resample image) not the resolution. This WILL NOT reduce the quality of the image output.

There is a way to scale smaller than 10% of original size within Quark, but it is a cheat and not really recommended.

Well the resolution of the image is only 72dpi (digital camera) and so reducing the file by half (document size) will not reduce quality. i know you already specified this but wanna be sure as finished doc is for full colour printing in a printing house. Just want to make sure, I have done this before but only when printing 'in-house'

Ok...alternative way to make sure....

Once you have opened the image in Photoshop....go to the help menu and 'resize image' just follow the instructions for the type of image you require...its as easy as pie!

Basically it allows you to up resolution whilst scaling down the physical image size.

A way I like is to first increase your DPI say doubled, save, then go back and reduce yur file size by half. You then will have the same file "pixel wise" in each.

But normally when we receive files in here from digital cameras I first set the DPI to 600, then resize the picture so that it is at it's finished size.

Resizing Pictures


You can scale pictures to make them larger or smaller using:


The Item menu: Choose Item ? Modify (Apple+M on Mac OS, Ctrl+M on Windows); then click the Picture tab. Enter values in the Scale Across and Scale Down fields to resize the picture. Click OK.

The Style menu: Select the picture and choose an option from the Style menu. The Center Picture option (AppleShift+M on Mac OS, Ctrl+Shift+M on Windows) centers the picture in the box, but does not actually resize it. The Fit Picture to Box option (AppleShift+F on Mac OS, Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows) rescales the picture so it fits in the box, but does not resize the picture proportionally. This option may distort the picture. The Fit Picture to Box (Proportionally) option (AppleOption+Shift+F on Mac OS, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F on Windows) rescales the picture proportionally so it fits in the box. The Fit Box to Picture option resizes the box to the size of the picture; the picture is not resized at all.

The Measurements palette: Enter values in the X% and Y% fields to resize the picture, and press Return (Mac OS) or Enter (Windows).

Decrease size by 5%

tperkins way will work...but if you are new to this world...use the help menu and resize image...as it is pretty fool proof and will give you the largest possible (x+y dimentions) at the resolution you require. It will also warn you if you are asking for a file size that is not recommended due to resoltion restrictions.
