image object on report displays only Xs

We are just starting to have to work with ssrs on a new project. We have two sqlservers running ssrs. One server is running sql server 2005 and I can deploy a report with images displayed from a table column as .jpgs. The other server is running sql server 2014 express. The I can create the same report with a copy of the same data but it will only display Xs when tested on the 2014 server. I can not find any errors to point to why everything works find on the 2005 server and won't display on the 2014. After a couple of days trying to figure it out, I can't make any progress. I'm starting to wonder if the problem is a sql server express limitation or something? Like I said, I don't really get any errors or event ids I can look up, I just get Xs instead of my images on the report when it renders. and noting else to go by.

Can anybody point me to any possible log files or some way to determine what is happening when the page runs? I have zero experience with ssrs and not much with sql server. I'm stuck and having no luck with this one. I'm guessing its a setting somewhere in ssrs but comparing both servers I can't really find anything that looks like it might be the problem setting.

I have discovered that once the report is on screen showing all those Xs, I can send it to a pdf file and the images are there just like they are supposed to be. I also verified the same behavior in on the report when run in firefox so it's not an Internet Explorer problem.
