I'm doing a hard drive upgrade for a friend. He has an orig Imac 233 Mhz with the tray. The orig drive is a 4GB IDE drive, and he wanted to upgrade to a 20GB. I can get the 20 GBrecognized, and install OS9 but the system wont boot to it. I get the flashing ? when I try to boot to the drive. I tried a smaller 5GB drive, and the install seems to be fine.

Can this system handle a drive as large as 20, or is there a special partitioning setup I need to run through?

Thanks for any help

Is this OSX? on a origonal iMac OSX must be the first partiition and it must be under 8 gig, I think if you partition the drive with 7 gig and 13 gig partitions OSX will boot. For the Classic MacOS, I am not aware of a need to partition.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

He didn't want OS X on there, so I am putting OS 9 on it. I saw the partitioning need for OS X that needed to be under 7 GB. I'll try that and see what we get.

You may need to update the firmware on the mac!!

If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

I tried a 13GB drive and it seemed to work fine. I bought a 20GB drive and it does the same thing as the first one. I dont want to take that drive back and have to pay restocking fees. I can't find anything that tells me what firmware I need to have on this.

I'll answer my post with the resolution. The drive was shipped with the jumper at "CS" and the ealier macs don't seem to be happy with Cable Select. Switched the jumper to force master and it works. 20GB partition worked fine and upgraded to 9.22

I never found out if there was a firmware upgrade.

I appreciate the links. I downloaded the firmware there, and none of them would work for this model. The 4.19 is only for the slot loading, and this one has a tray. It's the Imac 233Mhz Tray Loading Rev B. I figured there was no update for this model. Not a big deal, just wanted to make sure it was up to date before returning the mac to the owner.
