I have a TV that is an extension of a PC/its videocard, that is manually set to run a presentation. It works fine manually. I am being asked, that since the hosting PC is attached to the network and can get its file from there; can it unload/load a modified version of the presentation? Now management can update the presentation and the PC w/TV adapter can periodically reload the updated file.

I don't understand the question.

You want to, from time to time, reload an updated presentation, and have it take over? Would this presentation be running 24/7?

I don't get it...
sorry

Yes. The presentation would be 24/7 and is used to illustrate our manufacturing stats like actuals .vs. estimates. The goal would be to change the presentation from my pc and save it into a directory on the network. This hosting pc would see that this file is new and unload/load the new ppt.

I don't think that's happening.

This isn't really a PowerPoint issue.
The issue is that you want to replace a file while it is in use.
And that's not possible.

VBA may be able to do such a thing, but PPT VBA is much more limited than other Office applications.

Do you think a batch file running in a Scheduler and copying the file locally would suffice? The scheduler would periodically look for the newer instance and the local copy could be replaced in a copy routine.

Real,

If your chart were linked to source data and

If the OnTime method would function in Power Point

THEN...

you could set a link update periodically and you would not have to replace the file.

BUT I could NOT get it to work. Here's as far as I got, but the called procedure is not recognized...
Code:
Sub SetTimer()
    Dim xlApp As Excel.Application
    Set xlApp = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
    xlApp.OnTime Now + TimeValue("01:00:00"), "LinkUpdate"

    xlApp.Quit
    Set xlApp = Nothing
End Sub
Sub LinkUpdate()
    ActivePresentation.UpdateLinks
    SetTimer
End Sub
I am sure there's someone out there who's smatter than me.

Skip,

This looks like a job for picket-fenced PowerPoint file linking. Now before y'all start lobbing spoiled veggies my way, let me explain.

You will design 3 (yes, count them, three) presentations. Do I get a cut of the profits if I fix this? The first one will be the base presentation that will run the other 2. I could use some spare change, you know. The 2nd will be of general blah, blah, blah stuff. 'Welcome to my company', 'nice to employ you' type stuff. I'm not starving; in fact, I suppose, I could loss a little weight. But the 3rd file is the one you will be updating from time to time. I'm not fat either, just in a little negative cash flow type thing called life. The third file can be updated as needed and replaced. Since the base presentation will reload the file each time, your updates will go through on the next loop.

Check out this link for some more details. About the linking, not negative cash flows.

no spare change availible but how bout a star, you could show it to a perspective employer.

if it is to be it's up to me

Hey Half!

Now that's an innovative, expert solution! ==> STAR!

Half-a my hat's off!

Half - Great suggestion. I will do what I can to implemen it into our presentations. You get a star from me.

HalfListener,

Can you explain the 'common' slide to me? What is its purpose?

A common slide is a slide that appears exactly the same between two or more presentations. This is done so that the casual observer (sometimes referred to as the audience) does not notice that the presentation has changed.

You can use a black slide, or a design, or a picture, whatever, as long as it is exactly duplicated in both presentations.
