When i double click "my computer" the box opens.. but no drives i.e.-C;/,D;/,A:/ .. this is a really frustrating problem ..
example#1)try to access internet options from internet explorer--"this operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. please contact your system administrator."
example#2)i try to input a cammand line for a program or what-not(i.e-c:/windows/sierra/half-life/hl.exe)--"unable to find path","cannot find 'lkdj;dkgexmpl.exe'(or one of it's components). make shure the path and filename correct and that all required librairies are available."

i think the problem is related to my "network neighborhood" or perhaps a setting related to that(network). *note: computer is not connected to a network.. there is a cat5 connected. but that is cable modem. the computer was connected to a LAN party for a few days (perhaps when problem started)pretty much just plug and play though.. (connected myself)

thank you for any input

Hi bobby, sounds like you need a policy editor. Check out this address for instructions on how to install it, the program is poledit.exe... you will need your win 98 disk.

... i've never installed the program, just use it, so i don't know how acurate this is. It's not a hard program to use, but make sure you understand what your doing. I couldn't find any that could be downloaded, maybe there's something on microsofts webpage.

somebody thought they were being funny and ran a really nasty registry file on your machine. Or you may have ran it by accident, files with the .reg modify the registry.

do a backup from a saved version prior to the problem.

This is only an add on post to the good advice posted above.
( I gave him a star - just want to add some additional info)
>>> WINDOWS, by default saves 5 coopies of the REGISTRY sys files......

Do a REG RESTORE,,,,,, and use a REG BACKUP from the date right before the LAN PARTY........
(If it is NOT TOO LATE)

** Check this: C:\Windows\Sysbckup .......
> Scroll down: look for the files...... rb000, rb001, etc.
There should be 5.
ARE ANY OLDER THAN THE LAN PARTY DATE ?????
If so,,,,,,, save one, or all the ones that have the good dates....... for backup.

BOOT UP.... HOLDING THE F8 KEY
At the command prompt,,,,,,, select C:\ prompt
then run this simple command
> c:\scanreg /restore
and choose the number of the file that you noted had the right date.
Your system will REBOOT ......... and you will go back in time to before the LAN party..... and this *SHOULD* restore your computers full functionality.

( Then find out who did this a b-slap them :)

To Jakespeare:
Thank you for this additional info. However, could you tell me if the files RB001, RB002,etc..(each one with its own date) are the same as the one contained in c:\windows\system.dat and user.dat? System.dat and User.dat which can also be used for "going back" with the registry file currently in use.
Thank you for your answer.
