Can anyone help me? I have been working on a map in Illustrator for about a month. It contains Chinese Characters if that matters. Three days ago, I was unable to open the file, and got an error message saying that opening the illustration was interrupted and the offending operator was XI. I can place it in another file, but I can't modify what was already there. I really need to open (and finish) this project.

Here are a few things that might work...

open the file on a PC (they tend skip over these type of errors rather than hanging up on them)

Drag the icon into an open document window

Import the file into acrobat or distill it.

(PC only) rename the file with .pdf or .eps and open with another app like acrobat.

...forgot to mention, when dragging onto open window embed it to access the elements...

...if your still struggling i will try and post my email and have a go here if need be...

Andrew

Thanks, I am still struggling. Can't quite understand your directions. I am trying to find my AIprefs file, (someone recommended deleting that), but the main thing is..with your suggestions, is my file usable in AI? The project is incomplete. I have managed to save it as a TIF and can print it out, but I need to open it in AI and finish it.

...if you can get it to pdf to preserve the vector and import this to illy then you will be able to make edits, the layers will be flattened though...

send it to me if poss, I will try here, be quick though as they don't like people posting emails on here:

ap (at) apepp (dot) info

Andrew

Alt+Ctrl+shift on the PC or Cmd+Option+Shift on the mac while starting (before splash screen) will reset the prefs file...

Andrew

Thanks, I'll try that. You want me to send you the AI file? It is large.

...if you can, i have broadband here if you have only dial up then this may be more an issue your end...

Andrew

...stick it in a zip archive if possible to help things along a bit...

Andrew

...in fact if you don't zip archive it, it may get corrupted in transit...

Andrew

...as a back up, if this should bounce for any reason, post it to:

first attempt failed, tried the second address,

I created a pdf, but AI doesn't have an import option. Do I open it, place it, ??

...drag and drop onto illustrator or file > place it, in the links palette, go to the flyout menu (arrow top right) and choose embed...

Andrew

Actually, the PDF attempt didn't work. Got this message.

...have you tried dragging and dropping the ai file onto a new blank document window in illustrator, then embed it?
