Hi i have been having a problem with illustrator. When i try to save i get a message "An unknown error has occurred", when i close that box i get another message "Can't finish previewing. There isn't enough memory. ID = -108" , when i close that box i get the windows message "adobe illustrator has encountered a problem and needs to close....etc". I can't save in ai, pdf or eps or various options such as saving as ai with pdf option turned off etc. I've seen similar postings on various forums - solutions such as delete you illustrator cs2 settings folder or delete various preset files within that folder. I've tried reinstalling - nothing works. My computer is brand new and hardly anything on it and i have the same version of illustrator on another machine and the same operating system Windows xp pro (service pack 2) and alls fine with that computer. I've tried copying my illustrator cs2 settings folder from the good computer and pasting it in place on my 'bad' computer - again doesn't work. I'm about to format my computer and start again but i have a bad feeling that this wont cure it either... Any help / feedback would be much appreciated as i have completely run out of options other than to format and start again. - Thanks

We were having the same problems and we changed the "Plug-ins and Scratch Disks" preference for Primary AND Secondary to "MAC HD" instead of "Startup" and everything is wonderful

The single most common problem cause, on any platform, is a corrupted prefernces file. I use a mac so I'm not sure about PC but I thinks it's called "aiprefs" on pc. You can trash that. Illustrator will recreate that folder when you launch Illustrator.

If you reinstall the app, make sure to trash everything related to it before reinstalling. On a reinstall, not all related items are replaced - especially prefs.

Another cause of AI problems, most common on PC, is that it was installed with antivirus software running. Before you install any app - from a reputable company - disable all antivirus software.

You can find the AIPrefs file in WinXP under Documents and Settings - (user) - Application Data - Adobe - Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings.

Reinstalling doesn't work because when you uninstall/repair the program the preferences don't get trashed.

Hi thanks for your responses. For what it's worth here's how i got round the problem: I tried dumping prefs and re-installing etc but nothing worked. I gave up basically, and installed illustrator cs1. This was a brand new machine with nothing on it and CS1 and CS2 worked perfectly well on my old computer so i couldn't understand why cs2 wouldn't work on my new one, and i couldn't understand what the difference was between the 2 computers (same opperating system, antivirus, firewalls etc). CS1 worked on my new computer so i thought i'd give it one last try and installed cs2 and this time it worked. I presume for some strange reason that my computer needed cs1 to be able to install cs2.

Hey, im having the same problem as ppl!! I need help asap! i can save no worries on adobe illustrator cs2, but as soon as i add a font or add some writing on it, it says, unknown error, then not enough memory, then closes down! every time! but only when i use writing. ie if i use a logo and put mtgambier frisbee club, it wnt work, but if i put just the logo it will save no probs!!! can someone help me asap!!! it would be heaps appreciated!!!!!!! Thanks

In response to Adamcurk: have you tried dumping your preferences? This didn't work for me but worked for a lot of other people. I think it's possible that my cs2 is an upgrade from cs1 even though I was told it was the full version - I'm not sure as im not in charge of purchasing the software and when i installed it - it didn't ask for any evidence of a previous version. However when i uninstalled cs2 and installed cs1 and then re-installed cs2 everything worked fine and i wonder if cs2 (upgrade) needs elements of cs1 in order to work. This worked for me.

One thing that you also have to watch for is that you disable any antivirus, etc type software before installing. Sometimes antivirus screws part of the install. This is usually best to do when installing any reputable app - as opposed to some freebie you found on the web.

AS for fonts, it's always possible that there is a corrupted font so it's worth trying another to see what happens. If you're using a mac, you can have a corrupted font cache that has to be dumped.

I have been having a problem with Illustrator CS2 PC, where I cannot open a file (I can "Open Recent"), or Save a file. I have been running this program for about 6 months and no problem, just all of a sudden-nothing. No screen comes up when I go to Save or Open. Help Please???

Hi,
I have the same problem with saving... When there is at least single letter typed, it wont save. At work on WinXP, Illustrator CS2 will crash (I have lost a lot of work this way). At home it started only now as I have installed Windows Vista. When you convert the typed font to outlines, you can save it without problems. But it is not possible to edit the text anymore... :(
It is definitely not a problem of some settings... I believe it is an issue of some rights to some folders or something... because at work I have restricted access to only some small part of C: drive, and Vista is also restricting a lot of access. I am trying to figure out what is necessary to allow, but still unsuccessful. :(

I had the same problem and I went to DocumentsandSettings\user\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe\ Illustrator CS2 Settings and erased everything inside the folder, then I opened Illustrator and all worked fine.

For the Vista users out there, the prefs file is in a slightly different location...

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings

Know if you throw away your workspace files, you'll need to place your pallets back where you like them.
